Salon HER’s 23 Questions With Michael Kelly

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I think perfect happiness is unachievable. But I’m most happy when I feel like I have time. Time is something that you can’t buy and time is also something that you can’t get back. When I feel like I have time to do what I need to—spend time with family, friends, the dogs, things that are high-value to me—then I feel like I’m happy.

What is your favourite time of day?

Dusk and dawn. Dawn is only for a certain type of person which means not everyone is taking advantage of that time. But dusk is my favourite. I love twilight.

When are you the most inspired?

When all of my pillars are in line. If I feel like I’m rested, if I feel like I’m not stretched too thin; my emotional health, physical wellness and my work-life balance is all in check. Then I definitely feel like I have the capacity to feel inspired. Although, I seem to produce the best work when I’m manic.

Window or aisle seat?

Window. I’m a dreamer. I like to look at the clouds and imagine what’s going on.

What is your idea of a perfect date?

Meaningful conversation, curiosity, eye contact and sexual energy.

What is your star sign?

Scorpio. Through and through!

What is your greatest extravagance?

Among many things it would probably be fragrance. I always have at least ten $600 fragrances on the go! I am a signature scent person but I have different signature scents for going out for dinner, for work, for different occasions. I also love a spa treatment!

What is your current state of mind?

Conjuring wanderlust. I am looking for an international break.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Doll, listen, and hun.

Book or film?

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Harnessing adversity and being able to manifest that into a life that could have been really different.

What is your motto?

To not push the river as it flows by itself.

We're ordering breakfast: what are you having?

Bacon and egg roll on a gluten free bun. Bacon and egg rolls are not just for hungover people! There’s no shame in eating food that you love to eat. Oh, and a decaf almond cap.

How would you define yourself in 3 words?

Intense, tenacious and self-aware. Side note: I feel like there is a misconception of what intense is. I think it’s a positive thing to be intense, but intensity is something that differs person to person. My version of intense might not be suitable for everyone but then I am not for everyone. It’s okay to be who you are.

What is something you’re tired of?

I’m tired of.. people being a character for their audience on social media instead of being who they truly are more. It is important to show a balance. It’s nice to see people being all of themselves.

Night or morning?

Morning. I savour the mornings. I’m a morning person, for sure.

What is something you had to learn the hard way?

People are who they are. You can’t change them. Maya Angelou has a quote: when people show you who they are, believe them the first time.

What is something you always travel with?

I randomly always travel with a small pack of necessities that I might need in any situation. In my mini survival kit: nasal spray, a mini fragrance in a small decanted bottle, some valium, moisturiser, a lip balm, ear plugs, a pen, a small mouth wash, gua sha tool, a sheet mask...

What’s your favourite cocktail?

A filthy vodka martini with Ketel One vodka, bone dry, with three olives. If I want to seem fancy I’ll order an aviation.

What colour do you wear most?

Green. Earthy green. Any shade of earthy green.

Email or text?

If you were not doing your current job, what would you be doing?

I could be doing one of two things. One would be architectural design, for interiors, specifically hotels. Or brand curation and development, like a creative director.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

Simon Sinek, Oprah, Brene Brown and Lady Gaga.
